Laguna Seca – Race Report
May 25th
Successfully qualifying 4th for the 6hr at Laguna Velox Motorsport was excited to see the drop of the green flag. The weather was very cool and windy with mixed clouds as it had been the whole week of testing and practice.
At the drop of the green Shane Lewis made his patented early charge towards the front placing a firm grasp on the 2nd place position. At the half hour mark Lewis suffered contact with a LMPC competitor and received a direct hit to the right front wheel. This contact caused the inner wall of the steering rack casting to crack resulting in the loss of all power steering fluid not to mention a large alignment problem. Lewis ducked into the pits quickly and the team assessed there was no quick solution. With his gladiator attitude Lewis knew he had to continue. He also knew he had his work cut out for him and his co-driver Lawson Aschenbach.
The team regained composure in 8th position and although suffering from a lost lap they continued to press on as the afternoon drew towards dark.
With Lawson Aschenbach now in the drivers seat he too would begin the long stint of muscling the 997 around the twisty course. With a couple amazing restarts Aschenbach and Lewis were able to bring the Patron Porsche up as high as 3rd. With a half hour to go the team needed fuel and a driver change.
The last 20miutes were a mess of cautions and restarts. Unfortunately with the car in 5th place Lewis suffered contact with another competitor on the last lap resulting with a trip across the gravel trap costing them the 5th place position coming home in 6th.
Considering the amount of contact the team was pleased with 6th place and are already on their way to Utah in preparation for the next event.
